ARCH-B-14: Nervous Reflex Arc, Synaptic Neurotransmission & Endocrine Homeostasis (Insulin/Glucagon, Thermoregulation & Menstrual Cycle)
Step 1 of 6 • The Core Idea
ARCH-B-14: Why the 135s Classroom Method Fails Under the 90s Clock
Standard Classroom Method (Too Slow)~135s (Blows 90s Clock)
1. Reflex pathway: Receptor sensory neurone relay neurone (in CNS grey matter) motor neurone effector (muscle/gland) (1 is correct).
2. Spinal roots: Sensory neurones enter via the dorsal root (with a pseudo-unipolar cell body in the dorsal root ganglion); motor neurone cell bodies lie in the CNS grey matter and send axons out via the ventral root (2 is correct).
3. Reflexes are involuntary and bypass the conscious cortex, making them much faster than voluntary actions (3 is incorrect).
The Fast ShortcutTarget: 35s (Saves 100s)
Pathway = Sensory (dorsal root ganglion) Relay Motor (ventral root) (1 & 2 true); bypasses conscious brain for speed (not 3) 1 and 2 only.
Where Students Lose Time: In 15 past UAT-UK questions (6.44% of Biology), candidates lose 100s by blood vessels are fixed in position and never move toward/away from the skin surface; smooth muscle in arteriole walls relaxes (vasodilation) or contracts (vasoconstriction) to alter blood flow through surface capillaries. Instead, apply B9 with Maths 1 skill M4.14.
