Step 1 of 6 • The Core Idea

ARCH-C-12: Why the 135s Classroom Method Fails Under the 90s Clock

Standard Classroom Method (Too Slow)~135s (Blows 90s Clock)
Systematically shorten the longest carbon chain for C5H12\text{C}_5\text{H}_{12}: (1) **55-carbon chain:** pentane, CH3CH2CH2CH2CH3\text{CH}_3\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_3. (2) **44-carbon chain:** methylbutane, CH3CH(CH3)CH2CH3\text{CH}_3\text{CH(CH}_3)\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_3 (note that placing the methyl on C2\text{C2} or C3\text{C3} gives the exact same molecule). (3) **33-carbon chain:** dimethylpropane, C(CH3)4\text{C(CH}_3)_4. Total =3= 3 structural isomers (~95s).
The Fast ShortcutTarget: 35s (Saves 100s)
Line 1 (Chain-Length Reduction): C5\text{C}_5 chain (11: pentane) +C4+ \text{C}_4 chain (11: methylbutane) +C3+ \text{C}_3 chain (11: dimethylpropane).
Line 2 (Sum): 1+1+1=31 + 1 + 1 = 3 (20s).
Where Students Lose Time: In 10 past UAT-UK questions (4.44% of Chemistry), candidates lose 100s by every addition monomer must first be drawn as c=c with 4 attached groups; the repeat unit has a single c-c bond of length 2 carbons inside the brackets. Instead, apply C13 with Maths 1 skill M3.5.
