Deconstructed from 16 past UAT-UK questions (7.11% of all historical Mathematics 1 papers). Students using standard A-Level classroom methods spend an average of 150s on this archetype—blowing past the 90s ESAT budget. Using the 2-line Sub-90 heuristic below compresses solve time to 45s (saving 105s per question).

CARD 1 OF 6 • THE CLASSROOM TIME TRAP (150s)
Why Students Bleed Time:
The area of the 90∘90^\circ sector OABOAB is 90∘360∘π(62)=9π cm2\frac{90^\circ}{360^\circ}\pi(6^2) = 9\pi\text{ cm}^2. The area of the right-angled isosceles triangle OABOAB is 12×6×6=18 cm2\frac{1}{2} \times 6 \times 6 = 18\text{ cm}^2. Subtracting gives the minor segment area 9π−18 cm29\pi - 18\text{ cm}^2 (~95s).
In 16 past UAT-UK questions (7.11% of Mathematics 1), candidates lose 105s by halving instead of doubling the subtended angle, or substituting d into pi*r². Instead, apply M5 with Maths 1 skill M5.6.
CARD 2 OF 6 • THE 2-LINE SUB-90 HEURISTIC (<45s)
**Line 1 (Sector π\pi Term):** 14π(62)=9π\frac{1}{4}\pi(6^2) = 9\pi.
Line 2 (Subtract Right Triangle): 9π−12(6)(6)=9π−189\pi - \frac{1}{2}(6)(6) = 9\pi - 18 (20s).
Sanity & Limit Check: Verify units/signs against factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap (Confusing angle at centre (2*theta) with angle at circumference (theta) or using diameter d as radius r) and intermediate_stop_trap (Outputting the full sector area (theta/360)*pi*r² without subtracting the isosceles triangle (1/2)r²*sin(theta)).

FOIL #1factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap
Confusing angle at centre (2*theta) with angle at circumference (theta) or using diameter d as radius r

Halving instead of doubling the subtended angle, or substituting d into pi*r².

Open Factor-of-2 / Stoichiometry Clinic
FOIL #2intermediate_stop_trap
Outputting the full sector area (theta/360)*pi*r² without subtracting the isosceles triangle (1/2)r²*sin(theta)

Computing sector area and forgetting to subtract the unshaded triangle to isolate the segment.

Open Intermediate Stop Trap Clinic
FOIL #3fence_post_or_domain_trap
Forgetting that a tangent meets a radius at 90 degrees or that angles in a semicircle equal 90 degrees

Missing the implicit right angle required to apply Pythagoras on chord-tangent triangles.

Open Fence-Post / Domain Trap Clinic
FOIL #4sign_or_direction_flip
Adding instead of subtracting the overlapping lens/triangle region in composite shapes

Sign error in inclusion-exclusion area decomposition.

Open Sign / Direction Flip Clinic
