UAT-UK SPEC CODE: M4 (Algebra)ASSUMED MATHS 1 PREREQUISITE: M4.6FREQUENCY: VERY HIGH

Simultaneous Linear Combinations, Straight-Line Gradients & Inequalities

Deconstructed from 23 past UAT-UK questions (10.22% of all historical Mathematics 1 papers). Students using standard A-Level classroom methods spend an average of 135s on this archetype—blowing past the 90s ESAT budget. Using the 2-line Sub-90 heuristic below compresses solve time to 35s (saving 100s per question).

Card 1 & Card 2 Preview: The Classroom Time Trap vs. Sub-90 2-Line Rule

Excerpted from our interactive 6-Step Topic Lesson for ARCH-M1-08.

Launch All 6 Active-Recall Cards
CARD 1 OF 6 • THE CLASSROOM TIME TRAP (135s)
Why Students Bleed Time:
Subtract 77 from both sides: −3x2>6-\frac{3x}{2} > 6. Multiply both sides by 22: −3x>12-3x > 12. Dividing both sides by −3-3 reverses the inequality sign, giving x<−4x < -4 (~85s).
In 23 past UAT-UK questions (10.22% of Mathematics 1), candidates lose 100s by keeping the inequality direction unchanged when dividing by -a. Instead, apply M4 with Maths 1 skill M4.6.
CARD 2 OF 6 • THE 2-LINE SUB-90 HEURISTIC (<35s)
**Line 1 (Move −3x2-\frac{3x}{2} to Positive Side):** 7−13>3x2  ⟹  −6>3x27 - 13 > \frac{3x}{2} \implies -6 > \frac{3x}{2}.
**Line 2 (Scale by 23\frac{2}{3}):** −4>x  ⟹  x<−4-4 > x \implies x < -4 (20s).
Sanity & Limit Check: Verify units/signs against sign_or_direction_flip (Failing to reverse < to > when dividing an inequality by a negative coefficient) and fence_post_or_domain_trap (Writing x < -a or x < b instead of -a < x < b for (x+a)(x-b) < 0).

FOIL #1sign_or_direction_flip
Failing to reverse < to > when dividing an inequality by a negative coefficient

Keeping the inequality direction unchanged when dividing by -a.

Open Sign / Direction Flip Clinic
FOIL #2fence_post_or_domain_trap
Writing x < -a or x < b instead of -a < x < b for (x+a)(x-b) < 0

Selecting disjoint tails instead of the bounded interior region for a < 0 quadratic inequality.

Open Fence-Post / Domain Trap Clinic
FOIL #3sign_or_direction_flip
Using m₁ * m₂ = +1 instead of m₁ * m₂ = -1 for perpendicular lines

Taking the reciprocal without negating the gradient.

Open Sign / Direction Flip Clinic
FOIL #4intermediate_stop_trap
Solving for single variable x instead of the target linear combination 6x + 2y

Wasting 60s finding x and y individually and stopping before substituting into the target expression.
