UAT-UK SPEC CODE: M4 (Algebra)ASSUMED MATHS 1 PREREQUISITE: M4.2FREQUENCY: VERY HIGH

Algebraic Subject Rearrangement, Rational Fractions & Completing the Square

Deconstructed from 31 past UAT-UK questions (13.78% of all historical Mathematics 1 papers). Students using standard A-Level classroom methods spend an average of 140s on this archetype—blowing past the 90s ESAT budget. Using the 2-line Sub-90 heuristic below compresses solve time to 40s (saving 100s per question).

CARD 1 OF 6 • THE CLASSROOM TIME TRAP (140s)
Why Students Bleed Time:
Factor 22 out of the first two terms: 2(x2−6x)+23=2[(x−3)2−9]+23=2(x−3)2−18+23=2(x−3)2+52(x^2 - 6x) + 23 = 2[(x - 3)^2 - 9] + 23 = 2(x - 3)^2 - 18 + 23 = 2(x - 3)^2 + 5. Hence r=5r = 5 (~95s).
In 31 past UAT-UK questions (13.78% of Mathematics 1), candidates lose 100s by adding instead of subtracting the constant square completion term p*q². Instead, apply M4 with Maths 1 skill M4.2.
CARD 2 OF 6 • THE 2-LINE SUB-90 HEURISTIC (<40s)
**Line 1 (Vertex x=−b2a=3x = -\frac{b}{2a} = 3):** rr is simply the value of the quadratic at its vertex x=3x = 3.
**Line 2 (Evaluate at x=3x = 3):** r=2(32)−12(3)+23=18−36+23=5r = 2(3^2) - 12(3) + 23 = 18 - 36 + 23 = 5 (20s).
Sanity & Limit Check: Verify units/signs against sign_or_direction_flip (Writing p(x+q)² + r with r = c + p*q² instead of c - p*q²) and factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap (Subtracting q² instead of p*q² when factoring p(x² + (b/p)x) + c).

FOIL #1sign_or_direction_flip
Writing p(x+q)² + r with r = c + p*q² instead of c - p*q²

Adding instead of subtracting the constant square completion term p*q².

Open Sign / Direction Flip Clinic
FOIL #2factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap
Subtracting q² instead of p*q² when factoring p(x² + (b/p)x) + c

Forgetting that the outer coefficient p multiplies the inner completed-square constant.

Open Factor-of-2 / Stoichiometry Clinic
FOIL #3fence_post_or_domain_trap
Omitting ± when taking the square root of (x - a)² = f(y)

Dropping the negative root branch during subject rearrangement.

Open Fence-Post / Domain Trap Clinic
FOIL #4intermediate_stop_trap
Stopping at x/2 = ... before multiplying through by 2

Failing to clear the final coefficient on x.
