UAT-UK SPEC CODE: MM2 (Sequences and series)ASSUMED MATHS 1 PREREQUISITE: M2.6FREQUENCY: MEDIUM

Sigma Notation (Fence-Post n-m+1 Terms) & Periodic Recurrence Relations (u_{n+1} = f(u_n))

Deconstructed from 9 past UAT-UK questions (2.2% of all historical Mathematics 2 papers). Students using standard A-Level classroom methods spend an average of 155s on this archetype—blowing past the 90s ESAT budget. Using the 2-line Sub-90 heuristic below compresses solve time to 45s (saving 110s per question).

Card 1 & Card 2 Preview: The Classroom Time Trap vs. Sub-90 2-Line Rule

CARD 1 OF 6 • THE CLASSROOM TIME TRAP (155s)
Why Students Bleed Time:
Splitting into a(∑r=124r−∑r=14r)+b(24−5+1)a\left(\sum_{r=1}^{24} r - \sum_{r=1}^{4} r\right) + b(24 - 5 + 1) requires evaluating 12(24)(25)\frac{1}{2}(24)(25) and 12(4)(5)\frac{1}{2}(4)(5) separately, taking ~135s.
In 9 past UAT-UK questions (2.2% of Mathematics 2), candidates lose 110s by classic fence-post off-by-one error when lower summation index m > 1. Instead, apply MM2 with Maths 1 skill M2.6.
CARD 2 OF 6 • THE 2-LINE SUB-90 HEURISTIC (<45s)
Line 1 (Fence-Post Count): Number of terms is N=24−5+1=20N = 24 - 5 + 1 = 20; first term u5=13u_{5} = 13, last term u24=51u_{24} = 51.
**Line 2 (Average ×\times Count):** 202(13+51)=640\frac{20}{2}(13 + 51) = 640 (30s).
Sanity & Limit Check: Verify units/signs against fence_post_or_domain_trap (Using (n - m) terms instead of (n - m + 1) terms in sum_{r=m}^{n} c) and fence_post_or_domain_trap (Miscounting the remainder term when dividing total terms N by cycle period k (e.g. 100 = 33*3 + 1)).

FOIL #1fence_post_or_domain_trap
Using (n - m) terms instead of (n - m + 1) terms in sum_{r=m}^{n} c

Classic fence-post off-by-one error when lower summation index m > 1.

Open Fence-Post / Domain Trap Clinic
FOIL #2fence_post_or_domain_trap
Miscounting the remainder term when dividing total terms N by cycle period k (e.g. 100 = 33*3 + 1)

Dropping the final partial-cycle term in a periodic recurrence sum.

Open Fence-Post / Domain Trap Clinic
FOIL #3sign_or_direction_flip
Failing to alternate signs (-1)^n correctly on odd vs even indices

Treating (-1)^n as +1 on odd n.

Open Sign / Direction Flip Clinic
FOIL #4intermediate_stop_trap
Outputting the single cycle sum S_cycle instead of multiplying by the number of cycles (N // k) * S_cycle

Stopping after finding the sum of one repeating period.
