Series-Parallel Resistor Networks, Potential Dividers & Variable Sensor Meter Tables

Deconstructed from 23 past UAT-UK questions (9.87% of all historical Physics papers). Students using standard A-Level classroom methods spend an average of 145s on this archetype—blowing past the 90s ESAT budget. Using the 2-line Sub-90 heuristic below compresses solve time to 40s (saving 105s per question).

CARD 1 OF 6 • THE CLASSROOM TIME TRAP (145s)
Why Students Bleed Time:
First compute 1Rp=16+112=1872\frac{1}{R_p} = \frac{1}{6} + \frac{1}{12} = \frac{18}{72}, invert to get Rp=4 ΩR_p = 4\,\Omega, add Rs=2 ΩR_s = 2\,\Omega to obtain Rtot=6 ΩR_{\text{tot}} = 6\,\Omega, solve I=126=2.0 AI = \frac{12}{6} = 2.0\text{ A}, and finally multiply Vp=IRp=8.0 VV_p = I R_p = 8.0\text{ V} (~120s).
In 23 past UAT-UK questions (9.87% of Physics), candidates lose 105s by using conductance 1/r_p instead of resistance r_p = (r₁*r₂)/(r₁+r₂). Instead, apply P1 with Maths 1 skill M3.4.
CARD 2 OF 6 • THE 2-LINE SUB-90 HEURISTIC (<40s)
Line 1 (Product-Over-Sum): Rp=6×126+12=4 Ω  ⟹  Rtot=2+4=6 ΩR_p = \frac{6\times 12}{6+12} = 4\,\Omega \implies R_{\text{tot}} = 2 + 4 = 6\,\Omega.
Line 2 (Column Prune): I=126=2.0 AI = \frac{12}{6} = 2.0\text{ A} and Vp=2.0×4=8.0 VV_p = 2.0\times 4 = 8.0\text{ V} (30s).
Sanity & Limit Check: Verify units/signs against intermediate_stop_trap (Forgetting to invert 1/R_p = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂, adding 1/R_p directly to R_series) and sign_or_direction_flip (Assuming voltmeter across variable resistor R_var decreases when R_var increases).

FOIL #1intermediate_stop_trap
Forgetting to invert 1/R_p = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂, adding 1/R_p directly to R_series

Using conductance 1/R_p instead of resistance R_p = (R₁*R₂)/(R₁+R₂).

Open Intermediate Stop Trap Clinic
FOIL #2sign_or_direction_flip
Assuming voltmeter across variable resistor R_var decreases when R_var increases

Confusing current decrease (I drops) with potential divider share V_var = V_in * R_var/(R_fixed + R_var) (which rises).

Open Sign / Direction Flip Clinic
FOIL #3table_column_pruning_trap
Evaluating complex branch voltages before checking total circuit current ammeter column first

Failing to prune 50% of table rows immediately via total resistance -> main ammeter trend.

Open Table Column Pruning Trap Clinic
FOIL #4subsystem_isolation_trap
Applying V = IR using total battery EMF for a single resistor in a series divider

Using whole-circuit voltage instead of component potential difference.
