1D Coupled Multi-Body Resultant Force (F_net = ma), Lifts & Internal Tension

Deconstructed from 11 past UAT-UK questions (4.72% of all historical Physics papers). Students using standard A-Level classroom methods spend an average of 150s on this archetype—blowing past the 90s ESAT budget. Using the 2-line Sub-90 heuristic below compresses solve time to 40s (saving 110s per question).

CARD 1 OF 6 • THE CLASSROOM TIME TRAP (150s)
Why Students Bleed Time:
Apply Fnet=(m1+m2)aF_{\text{net}} = (m_1 + m_2)a: 5000−(600+400)=(1200+800)a  ⟹  a=40002000=2 m s−25000 - (600 + 400) = (1200 + 800)a \implies a = \frac{4000}{2000} = 2\text{ m s}^{-2}. Then isolate the trailer: T−400=800×2=1600  ⟹  T=2000 NT - 400 = 800 \times 2 = 1600 \implies T = 2000\text{ N} (~135s).
In 11 past UAT-UK questions (4.72% of Physics), candidates lose 110s by failing to treat the coupled blocks/train as a single system of mass (m₁ + m₂) when finding common acceleration a. Instead, apply P3 with Maths 1 skill M4.4.
CARD 2 OF 6 • THE 2-LINE SUB-90 HEURISTIC (<40s)
Line 1 (Proportional Drag Check): Since 6001200=400800\frac{600}{1200} = \frac{400}{800}, resistive drag is proportional to mass and cancels from the internal tension split!
Line 2 (Mass Fraction): T=Fdrive×m2m1+m2=5000×8002000=2000 NT = F_{\text{drive}} \times \frac{m_2}{m_1 + m_2} = 5000 \times \frac{800}{2000} = 2000\text{ N} (25s).
Sanity & Limit Check: Verify units/signs against subsystem_isolation_trap (Dividing driving force F by single mass m₁ instead of total coupled mass (m₁ + m₂) to find acceleration) and sign_or_direction_flip (Writing normal contact force in an upward-accelerating lift as m(g - a) instead of m(g + a)).

FOIL #1subsystem_isolation_trap
Dividing driving force F by single mass m₁ instead of total coupled mass (m₁ + m₂) to find acceleration

Failing to treat the coupled blocks/train as a single system of mass (m₁ + m₂) when finding common acceleration a.

Open Subsystem Isolation Trap Clinic
FOIL #2sign_or_direction_flip
Writing normal contact force in an upward-accelerating lift as m(g - a) instead of m(g + a)

Subtracting upward acceleration from g instead of solving N - mg = ma => N = m(g + a).

Open Sign / Direction Flip Clinic
FOIL #3multi_statement_linchpin_foil
Claiming normal contact force and weight on the same object form a Newton's 3rd Law pair

Violating Newton's 3rd Law criteria (must act on two different bodies and be of the same physical force type).

Open Multi-Statement Linchpin Foil Clinic
FOIL #4intermediate_stop_trap
Outputting system acceleration a instead of the internal coupling tension T = m_rear * a + F_resist_rear

Stopping after Step 1 (whole-system acceleration) before isolating the trailing body.

Open Intermediate Stop Trap Clinic
