UAT-UK SPEC CODE: P6 (Waves)ASSUMED MATHS 1 PREREQUISITE: M1.2FREQUENCY: VERY HIGH

Wave Equation (v = fλ), Refraction Invariance, Pulse-Echo Sonar (d = ½vt), Relative Waves & Redshift

Deconstructed from 35 past UAT-UK questions (15.02% of all historical Physics papers). Students using standard A-Level classroom methods spend an average of 130s on this archetype—blowing past the 90s ESAT budget. Using the 2-line Sub-90 heuristic below compresses solve time to 35s (saving 95s per question).

CARD 1 OF 6 • THE CLASSROOM TIME TRAP (130s)
Why Students Bleed Time:
In one complete oscillation, a particle moves from 0→+3 cm→0→−3 cm→00 \to +3\text{ cm} \to 0 \to -3\text{ cm} \to 0, covering 4×3=12 cm4 \times 3 = 12\text{ cm}. In 1 min=60 s1\text{ min} = 60\text{ s}, the particle completes N=ft=4×60=240N = f t = 4 \times 60 = 240 cycles, travelling 12×240=2880 cm12 \times 240 = 2880\text{ cm} (~115s).
In 35 past UAT-UK questions (15.02% of Physics), candidates lose 95s by forgetting that pulse-echo time t is a round trip (2d) and one full transverse oscillation covers 4 amplitudes (4a). Instead, apply P6 with Maths 1 skill M1.2.
CARD 2 OF 6 • THE 2-LINE SUB-90 HEURISTIC (<35s)
**Line 1 (Ignore λ\lambda, Use 4A4A per Cycle):** Wavelength λ=5 cm\lambda = 5\text{ cm} is a distractor! Distance per cycle =4A=12 cm= 4A = 12\text{ cm}.
**Line 2 (Multiply by 60ftmin60 f t_{\text{min}}):** d=12×4×60=2880 cmd = 12 \times 4 \times 60 = 2880\text{ cm} (25s).
Sanity & Limit Check: Verify units/signs against factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap (Calculating sonar/ultrasound reflection depth as d = v*t instead of d = (1/2)*v*t, or particle distance per cycle as 2A instead of 4A) and fence_post_or_domain_trap (Dividing wave graph length L by N crests instead of (N - 1) wavelengths).

FOIL #1factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap
Calculating sonar/ultrasound reflection depth as d = v*t instead of d = (1/2)*v*t, or particle distance per cycle as 2A instead of 4A

Forgetting that pulse-echo time t is a round trip (2d) and one full transverse oscillation covers 4 amplitudes (4A).

Open Factor-of-2 / Stoichiometry Clinic
FOIL #2fence_post_or_domain_trap
Dividing wave graph length L by N crests instead of (N - 1) wavelengths

Fence-post error: N wave crests span (N - 1) complete wavelengths λ.

FOIL #3multi_statement_linchpin_foil
Claiming wave frequency f changes during refraction or that the speed of light c in a vacuum changes for a receding star

Frequency f is invariant across refractive boundaries; speed of light c in a vacuum is invariant under relative source motion.

Open Multi-Statement Linchpin Foil Clinic
FOIL #4sign_or_direction_flip
Subtracting wave speed from ship speed |v_ship - v_wave| instead of adding (v_ship + v_wave) when moving in opposite directions

Head-on relative wave encounter speed is v_rel = v_ship + v_wave.
