Nervous Reflex Arc, Synaptic Neurotransmission & Endocrine Homeostasis (Insulin/Glucagon, Thermoregulation & Menstrual Cycle)

Deconstructed from 15 past UAT-UK questions (6.44% of all historical Biology papers). Students using standard A-Level classroom methods spend an average of 135s on this archetype—blowing past the 90s ESAT budget. Using the 2-line Sub-90 heuristic below compresses solve time to 35s (saving 100s per question).

CARD 1 OF 6 • THE CLASSROOM TIME TRAP (135s)
Why Students Bleed Time:
1. Reflex pathway: Receptor →\to sensory neurone →\to relay neurone (in CNS grey matter) →\to motor neurone →\to effector (muscle/gland) (1 is correct).
2. Spinal roots: Sensory neurones enter via the dorsal root (with a pseudo-unipolar cell body in the dorsal root ganglion); motor neurone cell bodies lie in the CNS grey matter and send axons out via the ventral root (2 is correct).
3. Reflexes are involuntary and bypass the conscious cortex, making them much faster than voluntary actions (3 is incorrect).
In 15 past UAT-UK questions (6.44% of Biology), candidates lose 100s by blood vessels are fixed in position and never move toward/away from the skin surface; smooth muscle in arteriole walls relaxes (vasodilation) or contracts (vasoconstriction) to alter blood flow through surface capillaries. Instead, apply B9 with Maths 1 skill M4.14.
CARD 2 OF 6 • THE 2-LINE SUB-90 HEURISTIC (<35s)
Pathway = Sensory (dorsal root ganglion) →\to Relay →\to Motor (ventral root) (1 & 2 true); bypasses conscious brain for speed (not 3)   ⟹  \implies 1 and 2 only.

Sanity & Limit Check: Verify units/signs against multi_statement_linchpin_foil (Statement claiming skin capillaries or arterioles move physically closer to or further from the skin surface during thermoregulation) and multi_statement_linchpin_foil (Claiming electrical impulses jump across the synaptic cleft (instead of chemical neurotransmitter diffusing across the cleft to post-synaptic receptors)).

FOIL #1multi_statement_linchpin_foil
Statement claiming skin capillaries or arterioles move physically closer to or further from the skin surface during thermoregulation

Blood vessels are fixed in position and NEVER move toward/away from the skin surface; smooth muscle in arteriole walls relaxes (vasodilation) or contracts (vasoconstriction) to alter blood flow through surface capillaries.

FOIL #2multi_statement_linchpin_foil
Claiming electrical impulses jump across the synaptic cleft (instead of chemical neurotransmitter diffusing across the cleft to post-synaptic receptors)

Synaptic transmission is strictly chemical (vesicle exocytosis -> diffusion of neurotransmitter -> receptor binding -> new electrical impulse), ensuring unidirectional flow.

FOIL #3sign_or_direction_flip
Swapping insulin (beta cells -> converts glucose to insoluble glycogen in liver/muscle when blood glucose is HIGH) with glucagon (alpha cells -> converts glycogen to glucose when blood glucose is LOW)

Confusing the hyperglycaemic hormone (glucagon) with the hypoglycaemic hormone (insulin) or confusing glycogen with glucagon.

Open Sign / Direction Flip Clinic
FOIL #4table_column_pruning_trap
Reading all 4 menstrual hormone curves before locking onto the sharp Day-14 LH surge (triggers ovulation) or post-ovulation corpus luteum progesterone dome (maintains uterus lining)

FSH matures follicle -> Oestrogen builds lining & triggers LH -> Day-14 LH surge causes ovulation -> Progesterone maintains lining.
