1D Multi-Stage Kinematics (v–t Graph Areas/Gradients) & Constant-Acceleration SUVAT

Deconstructed from 12 past UAT-UK questions (5.15% of all historical Physics papers). Students using standard A-Level classroom methods spend an average of 145s on this archetype—blowing past the 90s ESAT budget. Using the 2-line Sub-90 heuristic below compresses solve time to 40s (saving 105s per question).

CARD 1 OF 6 • THE CLASSROOM TIME TRAP (145s)
Why Students Bleed Time:
During the deceleration interval from t=40 st = 40\text{ s} to t=60 st = 60\text{ s} (Δt=20 s\Delta t = 20\text{ s}), the acceleration is a=0−2020=−1 m s−2a = \frac{0 - 20}{20} = -1\text{ m s}^{-2}. Using s=ut+12at2s = ut + \frac{1}{2}at^2 gives s=200 ms = 200\text{ m} (~115s).
In 12 past UAT-UK questions (5.15% of Physics), candidates lose 105s by omitting the factor of 1/2 in s = (1/2)(u+v)t or 2 in v² = u² + 2as. Instead, apply P3 with Maths 1 skill M4.14.
CARD 2 OF 6 • THE 2-LINE SUB-90 HEURISTIC (<40s)
Line 1 (Isolate Right Triangle): Deceleration occurs only from t=40 st = 40\text{ s} to 60 s60\text{ s} (Δt=20 s\Delta t = 20\text{ s}).
Line 2 (Triangle Area): s=12×20×20=200 ms = \frac{1}{2} \times 20 \times 20 = 200\text{ m} (25s).
Sanity & Limit Check: Verify units/signs against factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap (Calculating triangle area under v-t graph as v*t instead of (1/2)*v*t, or using v² - u² = as instead of 2as) and sign_or_direction_flip (Adding areas above and below the time axis when asked for net displacement (or subtracting when asked for total distance)).

FOIL #1factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap
Calculating triangle area under v-t graph as v*t instead of (1/2)*v*t, or using v² - u² = as instead of 2as

Omitting the factor of 1/2 in s = (1/2)(u+v)t or 2 in v² = u² + 2as.

Open Factor-of-2 / Stoichiometry Clinic
FOIL #2sign_or_direction_flip
Adding areas above and below the time axis when asked for net displacement (or subtracting when asked for total distance)

Confusing scalar total distance with signed vector displacement on a v-t graph.

Open Sign / Direction Flip Clinic
FOIL #3subsystem_isolation_trap
Dividing final velocity by total time when acceleration is only active for part of the motion

Mixing constant-velocity cruise time with acceleration time.

Open Subsystem Isolation Trap Clinic
FOIL #4intermediate_stop_trap
Finding stopping time t instead of total stopping distance (thinking + braking)

Omitting the constant-speed thinking distance u*t_react.

Open Intermediate Stop Trap Clinic
