UAT-UK SPEC CODE: P3 (Mechanics)ASSUMED MATHS 1 PREREQUISITE: M1.2FREQUENCY: HIGH

Work-Energy-Power Conservation (ΔE_p = mgΔh, E_k = ½mv^2) & Resistive Drag Work

Deconstructed from 17 past UAT-UK questions (7.3% of all historical Physics papers). Students using standard A-Level classroom methods spend an average of 140s on this archetype—blowing past the 90s ESAT budget. Using the 2-line Sub-90 heuristic below compresses solve time to 40s (saving 100s per question).

CARD 1 OF 6 • THE CLASSROOM TIME TRAP (140s)
Why Students Bleed Time:
Motor heat loss is (1−0.75)×20=5 kJ(1 - 0.75) \times 20 = 5\text{ kJ}, leaving 15 kJ15\text{ kJ} of mechanical work. Useful GPE gained is mgh=1000×10×1.2=12 kJmgh = 1000\times 10\times 1.2 = 12\text{ kJ}, so ramp friction loses 15−12=3 kJ15 - 12 = 3\text{ kJ}. Total lost to surroundings is 5+3=8 kJ5 + 3 = 8\text{ kJ} (~135s).
In 17 past UAT-UK questions (7.3% of Physics), candidates lose 100s by omitting initial kinetic energy when the object starts with non-zero speed u. Instead, apply P3 with Maths 1 skill M1.2.
CARD 2 OF 6 • THE 2-LINE SUB-90 HEURISTIC (<40s)
Line 1 (Global Energy Box): The 75%75\% motor efficiency is a distractor! Everything not stored as mghmgh goes to the surroundings.
**Line 2 (Subtract mghmgh):** Elost,total=Ein−mgh=20 kJ−12 kJ=8 kJE_{\text{lost,total}} = E_{\text{in}} - mgh = 20\text{ kJ} - 12\text{ kJ} = 8\text{ kJ} (20s).
Sanity & Limit Check: Verify units/signs against subsystem_isolation_trap (Equating work against drag to mgh only, ignoring initial kinetic energy (1/2)mu² (e.g. parachutist leaving a moving plane)) and factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap (Omitting 1/2 in E_k = (1/2)mv² or forgetting to square velocity v).

Examiner Distractor Blueprint for ARCH-P-09

FOIL #1subsystem_isolation_trap
Equating work against drag to mgh only, ignoring initial kinetic energy (1/2)mu² (e.g. parachutist leaving a moving plane)

Omitting initial kinetic energy when the object starts with non-zero speed u.

Open Subsystem Isolation Trap Clinic
FOIL #2factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap
Omitting 1/2 in E_k = (1/2)mv² or forgetting to square velocity v

Arithmetic slip in kinetic energy evaluation.

Open Factor-of-2 / Stoichiometry Clinic
FOIL #3fence_post_or_domain_trap
Using slope length d instead of vertical height h in ΔGPE = mgh

Multiplying weight mg by inclined ramp distance instead of vertical elevation change.

Open Fence-Post / Domain Trap Clinic
FOIL #4intermediate_stop_trap
Outputting total energy lost W_drag instead of average drag force F_drag = W_drag / d

Forgetting to divide work done against friction by the distance travelled.

Open Intermediate Stop Trap Clinic
