UAT-UK SPEC CODE: P4 (Thermal physics)ASSUMED MATHS 1 PREREQUISITE: M1.2FREQUENCY: MEDIUM

Specific Heat Capacity (Q = mcΔT), Latent Heat (Q = mL) & Electrical Heating Curves (Pt = mcΔT)

Deconstructed from 11 past UAT-UK questions (4.72% of all historical Physics papers). Students using standard A-Level classroom methods spend an average of 140s on this archetype—blowing past the 90s ESAT budget. Using the 2-line Sub-90 heuristic below compresses solve time to 40s (saving 100s per question).

CARD 1 OF 6 • THE CLASSROOM TIME TRAP (140s)
Why Students Bleed Time:
Total energy supplied is Ein=Pt=40×50=2000 JE_{\text{in}} = P t = 40 \times 50 = 2000\text{ J}. Convert mass m=51000 kgm = \frac{5}{1000}\text{ kg} and compute energy retained by the tip: Q=mcΔT=0.005×400×200=400 JQ = mc\Delta T = 0.005 \times 400 \times 200 = 400\text{ J}. Energy lost to surroundings is 2000−400=1600 J2000 - 400 = 1600\text{ J} (~120s).
In 11 past UAT-UK questions (4.72% of Physics), candidates lose 100s by failing to divide mass in grams by 1000 to match kg. Instead, apply P4 with Maths 1 skill M1.2.
CARD 2 OF 6 • THE 2-LINE SUB-90 HEURISTIC (<40s)
**Line 1 (Unit Guardrail g→kg\text{g} \to \text{kg}):** Qtip=51000×400×200=400 JQ_{\text{tip}} = \frac{5}{1000} \times 400 \times 200 = 400\text{ J}.
**Line 2 (Subtract from PtPt):** Elost=(40×50)−400=2000−400=1600 JE_{\text{lost}} = (40\times 50) - 400 = 2000 - 400 = 1600\text{ J} (25s).
Sanity & Limit Check: Verify units/signs against unit_or_prefix_mismatch (Leaving mass in grams (e.g. 2.0 g) when specific heat capacity c is in J kg⁻¹ °C⁻¹) and factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap (Inverting the gradient k = ΔT / t of a temperature-time graph: writing c = P*k/M instead of c = P/(M*k)).

FOIL #1unit_or_prefix_mismatch
Leaving mass in grams (e.g. 2.0 g) when specific heat capacity c is in J kg⁻¹ °C⁻¹

Failing to divide mass in grams by 1000 to match kg.

Open Unit / Prefix Mismatch Clinic
FOIL #2factor_of_two_or_stoichiometry_trap
Inverting the gradient k = ΔT / t of a temperature-time graph: writing c = P*k/M instead of c = P/(M*k)

From Pt = McΔT, gradient k = ΔT/t = P/(Mc), so c = P/(Mk).

Open Factor-of-2 / Stoichiometry Clinic
FOIL #3intermediate_stop_trap
Outputting energy absorbed by tip mcΔT (160 J) instead of energy lost to surroundings P*t - mcΔT (1500 - 160 = 1340 J)

Stopping after computing mcΔT without subtracting from total electrical heater input P*t.

Open Intermediate Stop Trap Clinic
FOIL #4subsystem_isolation_trap
Omitting sensible heating mcΔT when ice at -10 °C melts and warms to +20 °C

Including latent heat mL only and forgetting temperature change stages.
